Organized each year by « la Maison de la Culture » (Cultural department), the Heiva is an event not to be missed by all the polynesians. The “Ori Tahiti” schools, traditional Polynesian songs and dances are held for several days in the month of July in Papeete. Each dance group gathers hundreds of singers, dancers and musicians.
The performances mix scenes of traditional lives and legends of the islands. The dance groups compete against each other to win the maximum of prizes: the best music, the best men and women solo dancers, best traditional outfit… and of course, the most desirable price for the best group performance.
The dance performances of the Heiva are available to everyone but it is advised to reserve a seat ahead of time because it is an event most attended by the local people. Families are often spread between Tahiti and the islands to better enjoy the event to meet each other before and after the dance performances. The atmosphere of the Heiva often goes on after the performances, to the “roulottes” in Vaiete.
Once you hear about the Heiva program, your traver counselor can reserve your seats; do not hesitate to ask for information…
